This painting is one in a series of explorations of the Pack Horse Librarians who traveled the hills of Appalachia during The Great Depression. Inspired by the writings of Barbara Kingsolver’s novel, Demon Copperhead, I was curious to learn more about this side of the country and history. I stumbled upon a group of amazing women, the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky, who delivered books to the forgotten people in the almost inaccessible eastern mountains. I found their story remarkable and saw it through different eyes after reading Kingsolver’s novel.
